Access to Coverage - Nearly Everywhere

As a Blue Shield of California HMO member, you can take your healthcare benefits with you when you’re away from home.

The BlueCard® Program gives you and your family access to covered services when you’re away from home. With over 90% of providers in the United States in BlueCard’s national network, and providers in 170 countries in the Blue Shield Global Core Network, you have access to care wherever you go.

The BlueCard® Program is for short trips.


If you need out-of-area care for fewer than 90 consecutive days, call your primary care physician or Blue Shield for prior authorization and/or precertification, if necessary, using the phone number on your ID card.

Virtual health care and advice across the U.S.

If a health issue arises when you’re away from home, you’ve got options – no matter the hour or if you’re out of state.

  • Teladoc Health: Connect with a doctor by phone or video, 24 hours a day.

  • NurseHelp 24/7 SM: Get advice from a registered nurse at any time.

  • Blue Card ®: Access covered services (like urgent care) when traveling in another Blue Cross Blue Shield service area.
